Intro to Film Production After-School Program

An 8-week after-school program teaching grades 4 and 5 the foundations of filmmaking — from storytelling and scriptwriting to camera work, directing, and editing — ending in a student-made short film.

— Project Overview

Southpointe Academy enlisted Dream It Creations to lead an eight-week after-school film production program for grades 4 and 5. The goal was to introduce students to the foundations of filmmaking — storytelling, scriptwriting, cameras, audio, lighting, acting, and editing. Throughout the course, students gained hands-on experience and collaborated on creating a short film, building their creativity and storytelling skills in a structured learning environment.

— Project Goals

  • Introduce young students to the fundamentals of film production
  • Guide students through the process of creating a short film from concept to completion
  • Foster creativity, teamwork, and technical skills in a fun and engaging way

Challenges

One of the biggest challenges was condensing the complete filmmaking process into eight 45-minute-to-1-hour sessions, making sure students could learn, practice, and apply what they learned within the time available. Introducing young students to professional-grade equipment also took a hands-on approach — keeping them engaged while making sure the learning stayed safe and effective.

Results

Over eight weeks, the students learned the fundamentals of storytelling, camera work, sound recording, directing, and editing — ultimately producing a 2-minute short film. The final class featured a film showcase, where students watched their completed project and celebrated their hard work and newfound skills. Each participant walked away with a deeper understanding of the filmmaking process and a creative experience they can build on in the future.

This program reflects Dream It Creations’ commitment to fostering creativity, collaboration, and hands-on learning in film production — and we look forward to offering similar programs to inspire the next generation of filmmakers.

We carefully structured the program to give students a balanced mix of theory and hands-on learning. Each week covered a key aspect of filmmaking, from story development and pre-production to cinematography, sound, and editing. The course included:

  • Guided lessons with interactive discussions and demonstrations
  • Practical exercises using professional filmmaking equipment
  • Collaboration and teamwork, with students taking on different production roles
  • A guest session with filmmaker Justin MacGregor for deeper insight into the industry
  • Film production days, where students worked in teams to bring their stories to life
