Valerie Jerome

Short Documentary

A short documentary showcasing the grand opening of a new rec centre in North Vancouver, named after Olympian Harry Jerome.

— Project Overview

On July 25, 2026, the City of North Vancouver held the grand opening of the Harry Jerome Community Recreation Centre, named for the late Harry Jerome — Canadian sprinter, Olympic bronze medalist, and North Vancouver’s own. His sister, Valerie Jerome, brought Dream It Creations on to capture the day and turn it into something that would outlast it.

The brief was straightforward and the stakes were not: one afternoon to capture a ceremony, an artwork unveiling, and three interviews that would carry the emotional core of the piece — then turn that single day into a short documentary built.

— Project Goals

  • Capture the full ceremony and artwork unveiling
  • Build a documentary that carries the personal weight of the day through interviews, not just event coverage
  • Deliver a piece built to represent the centre, and Valerie’s connection to it, for years

Challenges

The entire shoot had to happen in one afternoon with no re-shoot possible — a fixed ceremony start time, an unveiling that happens once, and three separate interview subjects, who all needed to be captured in the roughly three-hour window after the ceremony wrapped. Getting clean audio and coverage across a live public event, then turning around three interviews back-to-back, left no margin for setup delays.

Results

The film was structured, shot, and delivered on the agreed timeline, giving the Jerome family a documentary ready to represent the grand opening going forward.

— The Deliverables

What We Delivered.

Video video

Short Documentary

8 minutes of the grand opening ceremony, artwork unveiling, and interviews.

— The Approach

One videographer covered the full event window, arriving an hour ahead of the ceremony to capture the space before the crowd arrived, then filming the ceremony and unveiling as they happened. With no chance to reshoot any of it, the day was planned around getting the ceremony and unveiling first and treating everything after as recoverable — three interviews, scheduled and coordinated on-site so each subject had a clear, unhurried slot. In the edit, Valerie Jerome’s interview became the anchor — her connection to her brother and to what the centre represents carries the film.

Many thanks for all your hard work on this project. It really means a lot to Valerie – the opening of the HJCRC was 10 years to bring it to completion!
